Hybrid Hillsboro: Writing Chapter One

October 11, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Willamette Writers Hillsboro: Writing Chapter One with D. Wallace Peach

There are a number of perfectly legitimate types of first chapters. Diana will discuss four common ones:

  • The Prolog – An episode that pertains to your story but is in some way outside your main narrative.
  • The Hero-Action Beginning – The hero is onstage, doing something active and interesting related to the story’s core or theme.
  • The In Medias Res Beginning (in the middle of things) – You start deep in the story, and show a bit of activity to intrigue the reader.
  • The Frame Device – Your story is bookended on the front and back by a story that is outside the main story.

About Diana Wallace Peach

Diana Wallace Peach, who lives in Vernonia, OR, is the author of more high fantasy and science fiction books than any of us have toes and fingers (22 books to date). As an author, she was a late starter, who began her writing after the kids were grown and a move left her with hours to fill. Years of working in business surrendered to a full-time indulgence in the imaginative world of books, and when she started writing, she was instantly hooked. Diana lives in a log cabin amongst the tall evergreens and emerald moss of Oregon’s rainforest with her husband, two owls, a horde of bats, and the occasional family of coyotes.

Join us at Brookwood Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR, on October 11, 2022, at 6:00 PM. This meeting will also be on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIkcuGtrTgqHtWebMCzB8h1JDczzMjzNmA3
