Much has been said about how the medium is the message. So how do video games, as a medium, tell stories? Join the Hillsboro Chapter of Willamette Writers with the support of Oregon Film as they explore this question with Arianna Goodman on June 11th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM In-Person at the Hillsboro Brookwood Library or Online on Zoom.
Video games are a unique mode of interaction between art and viewer unlike any other medium. Cinema has editing; theater provides a live experience; novels, an intimacy with a reader’s mind. Video games introduce the concepts of gameplay mechanics and player agency to storytelling. The types of stories that can be told and how those stories can be conveyed to the audience through these intriguing mechanisms is a concept known as ludonarrative, and it is a fascinating (and on-going) conversation in the industry that revolves around craft, artistry, and possibilities left unexplored.
In this discussion, Arianna Goodman will walk us through her own perspective on ludonarrative, and how she approaches such a dynamic artform as a storyteller.
