From Messy First Draft to Masterpiece with South Beach author Sue Fagalde Lick
You’ve turned out a bunch of pages in a burst of inspiration or the marathon of Nanowrimo. Congratulations. You’re off to a good start. But is it ready to publish? Not even close. What you have is a raw lump of clay ready to be shaped into a work of art. Disappointed? Don’t be. This is the best part. In this workshop, South Beach author Sue Fagalde Lick will take writers through the steps of revision, rewriting, editing, and proofreading needed to create a publishable book.
The discussion will include how to make sure your characters ring true, make each chapter do the work it should, ramp up the suspense, eradicate unnecessary words, and conquer verbal tics. We will also talk about when and how to bring in help, such as critique groups, beta readers, and paid professional editors. Participants will come away with a plan for the next steps to take with their books.
Sue Fagalde Lick’s most recent book is Seal Rock Sound, a sequel to her novel Up Beaver Creek. Both books are set in Lincoln County, Oregon. She has published several other books, including Unleashed in Oregon, Stories Grandma Never Told, Azorean Dreams, Childless by Marriage, and two poetry chapbooks. Co-founder of the Oregon Coast Chapter of Willamette Writers, she is currently president of the Oregon Poetry Association.
About the Meetings
The Coast Chapter holds monthly meetings for writers near Newport. We always look forward to meeting and seeing members from other chapters, unless otherwise stated.
Willamette Writers meetings are open to all writers, 18 and up. Young writers are encouraged to join our Young Willamette Writers meetings. Guests are welcome to make a donation to help support the cost of the meeting (we believe in paying our speakers for their time and skills). This meeting is run by volunteers. We look forward to seeing you there!
MASKING: Willamette Writers continues to require mask-wearing at our in-person, indoor meetings. If you are unable to mask, we invite you to join us at one of our online Chapter Meetings. Here is a link to our policies.

The Coast Chapter meets on the third Saturday of each month from September through June, with no meetings in July, August, and December.
