By request, the Hillsboro chapter of Willamette Writers will host an online critique session. Whether you wish to share an excerpt of your own work, or just hear what others are doing, let’s learn from each other! Join us at 6:00 – 8:00 PM on May 14th on Zoom, and come ready to engage your fellow writers.

For critiques: Have a document with your excerpt ready to screenshare with the group. We will give each writer five minutes of reading time (approximately 700-800 words), and then five minutes for feedback from the group.

We are an open, supportive, and caring community. WW Critiques are writer-focused and encouraging. As such, we promote positive feedback along with suggestions for improvement. Learning our strengths helps us better tackle those areas that need developing, and we want everyone to walk away inspired to keep writing!

For examples of constructive criticism techniques, we suggest looking into methods such as the compliment sandwich method, “I” language, and actionable feedback as a starting point.

With such limited time for each writer, we ask that feedback focus on style, character, tone, etc., rather than grammar. We also ask participants to avoid contentious topics such as religion, politics, and the use of AI. As a critique session, we want to keep focus on the writing itself.

If you are interested in joining broader discussions with fellow writers, we encourage you to look into our Coffee At Your Kitchen Table series! It’s an online hangout space on Tuesdays and Saturdays where writers meet and chat about anything and everything. Check the listings on our Events Calendar for more details.
