Online: Speaking with our #OwnVoices – Nisi Shawl

April 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Speaking with our #OwnVoices – Nisi Shawl

Author Nisi Shawl will present how to write your truth when your experience isn’t the same as the dominant narrative. We know our truths, and we want our stories to tell them. How can we depict plots, settings, and characters falling outside of current ideas of what’s normal? How can we surprise and delight our readers with worlds seen from our unique viewpoints? Hear author/editor and inclusivity advocate Nisi Shawl outline ways to pinpoint, examine, write, and champion our nonstandard perspectives.

Join your Southern and Eugene Chapter meetings on April 11th at 7PM online.

About Nisi Shawl

Nisi Shawl co-authored Writing the Other: A Practical Approach, a standard text on inclusivity and the basis for their many classes and workshops on the subject. They also wrote the Otherwise Award-winning story collection Filter House and edited New Suns: Speculative Fiction by People of Color, a winner of the World Fantasy and Ignyte awards. They’re a co-founder of the inclusivity-in-genre nonprofit the Carl Brandon Society and a longtime board member for the Clarion West Writers Workshop. Everfair, their debut novel, was a 2016 Nebula finalist. A new story collection, Fruiting Bodies, is due out in Fall 2022.
