Finding The Mystery In The Heart Of Your Novel

Every book is a mystery, but not every novel is a whodunit. What can you learn from analyzing a traditional mystery to add depth to your story, regardless of genre? We’ll look at the building blocks of a classic mystery, from clues to red herrings, authentic villains to flawed sleuths. We’ll talk about how understanding these elements can improve the plot of every work-in-progress.

About Kelly Garrett

Kelly Garrett’s debut YA novel, “The Last To Die,” was an Oregon Book Awards finalist and was re-issued by Sourcebooks Fire in November 2019. She also writes The Ground Rules Mystery Series as Emmeline Duncan. Fresh Brewed Murder came out on March 30th, 2021, from Kensington Books. The second novel in the series, Double Shot Death, will arrive in April 2022. Kelly also received a 2020 Oregon Literary Fellowship. She lives in Portland, where she explores coffee shops and regional hiking trails, frequently accompanied by a giant white dog. You can track her online at emmelineduncan.com.
