Join us on Monday, April 22, 2024, in person at the Corvallis Community Center at 6:30 pm (doors open at 6:15 pm) for a generative workshop on the art of subtext.

In films, subtext is limited to acting. In written stories, subtext does a whole lot more. It adds character development, emotional truth, story information, etc. – all the tools that create depth.
Yet aspiring writers often omit subtext. Sometimes their omissions are due to confusion about “show don’t tell.”  Sometimes omissions are accidental because writers assume readers can fill it in. Sometimes omissions are on purpose because writers worry about “hitting readers over the head.”
In this interactive presentation, excerpts from stories by popular authors will illustrate: how thinking is showing; how readers can rarely fill it in correctly; and how much info it really takes to “hit the reader over the head.”
