Saturday May 2, 2015: Elizabeth Lyon presents How to Give Your Writing Character and Depth

Morning Presentation:   “Like an Alley Cat on Steroids”

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.   Free to members, $10.00 visitors

Writing similes and metaphors is as simple as drawing water from a perpetually bubbling spring—for a lucky few.

Imagery and comparisons add layers of meaning, characterization, color, and often humor, and bring art to craft. By modeling examples, we’ll craft imagery appropriate to your characters, settings, objects, actions, themes, and time or era.

Afternoon Workshop: “Character + Scene + Subtext = Suspense and Theme”

1:30 – 3:30 p.m.   $25.00 for members, $30.00 for guests ($35 for whole day)

Crafting a character personality is a good beginning but shallow. Weaving hidden motivations, contradictory goals, and unmet psychological needs into each scene will engage hearts and minds, and keep suspense high. If characters, scenes and plots are treated as separate parts, the result is a disjointed story. Through lively brainstorming, we will learn to:

  • Join character and scene in plot and move them through time
  • Connect settings, props, symbolism and character relationships
  • Test alternate character personalities and see different outcomes

Elizabeth Lyon, a book editor since 1988, has worked with hundreds of writers, seeing publication of over 60 clients. Lyon has written many books on the craft and marketing of fiction and nonfiction, including bestselling Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write, Sell Your Novel Tool Kit, and Manuscript Makeover, selected by The Writer’s reviewer as “perhaps the most comprehensive book on revising fiction.” She is also the author of two short books, Writing Subtext and Crafting Titles.

Southern Oregon Willamette Writers meets at Central Point City Hall Council Chambers, 140 S. Third Street, Central Point, Oregon.
