Master Class: Building, Modulating, and Mastering Suspense

Join us for this Master Class with Hallie Ephron.

Suspense: You know it when you feel it, but how do you build it into a scene? Into a novel?

This workshop will focus on methods for building and modulating suspense. Participants will leave with a toolbox of techniques to apply to their own work, as well as feedback on their own writing.

As we focus on driving your novel with suspense, topics will include (but are not limited to): how to harness setting, manipulate viewpoint, modulate (how to tighten; how to loosen; how to release) tension, and structure the overall plot.

BRING: 12 copies of an excerpt (up to 500 words) of a work-in-progress in which you’ve tried to build suspense. And be prepared to share it with the other workshop participants. We’ll discuss what’s working and what’s not, and how to make your passage  stronger.

Master classes are small, focused workshops, limited to 15 writers, and presented by industry professionals. This Master Class is five hours long, and includes lunch. You must register to attend Master Classes at an additional cost. Please register here.
