Nonfiction Writing: How to Bring Your Facts to Life
The Young Willamette Writers return for the 2020-2021 year on Saturday, September 12, from 10-11:30 am. We’re excited about the great authors lined up for our Zoom meetings (which will last through the end of 2020).
We hope to resume our in-person meeting in 2021. Please note this meeting is on the second Saturday of the month. October through December we will meet on the first Saturday of the month.
Our September speaker is Ruth Musgrave, a nonfiction writer who will provide us with tools to keep our nonfiction writing from sounding like an encyclopedia.
Here is a description of her workshop. Nonfiction Writing: How to Bring Your Facts to Life Can’t wait to write your story about Abe Lincoln’s socks, the stalk-eyed fly, or your expertise in bathing yaks, but don’t know where to start? Nonfiction writing is more than spouting facts. Discover how, with a few slight differences, good nonfiction and fiction writing are the same. Nonfiction needs superb words, captivating sentences, and most importantly, a voice that invites readers into the story and keeps them riveted to the end.
Ruth A. Musgrave talks with turtles, has sea stars in her eyes, and counts sharks among her most trusted friends. (But not that ninja lantern shark who still owes her twenty bucks!) Ruth is also an award-winning author of 30 nonfiction children’s books including National Geographic Kids, Everything Sharks, Ultimate Weird But True, and Mission Shark Rescue. This last spring, Ruth had five books come out with the new Do You Know? BBC Earth Series from Ladybird Education/Penguin Random House UK. She is also the contributing writer and on the editorial team for “National Geographic Little Kids Magazine” and a frequent contributor to “National Geographic Kids Magazine.” When pressed, Ruth will admit to researching and writing about more than a zillion animals for 2 gazillion published articles (she swears these are accurate numbers). Ruth’s books and articles have been translated into multiple languages for kids around the world.
