YWW Portland Online: Blending History and Fantasy
May 1 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Blending History and Fantasy: Researching and incorporating historical details into your fantasy world
Join the Young Willamette Writers on May 1 as we hear from author Lani Forbes, author of the Age of the Seventh Sun fantasy series. Lani used her knowledge of ancient Mesoamerican cultures in crafting her novels, even traveling to a cave to see the supposed entrance to the underworld. In this workshop, we will learn how to evaluate the quality of research resources and how to decide which details to include in fantasy worlds inspired by history.
The Young Willamette Writers meets (on Zoom for now) the first Saturday of the month from September through June, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Meetings are always free and open to all students age 13-18. While we meet online, the Southern Oregon and Portland chapters are combined (double the fun!).
If you’d like to join us, email email@example.com to ask for the Zoom link.
Lani Forbes is the daughter of a librarian and an ex-drug smuggling surfer (which explains her passionate love of the ocean and books). A former teacher turned trauma counselor, her passion is showing readers the transformative and encouraging power of story on the human experience. A California native whose parents live in Mexico, Lani now resides in the Pacific Northwest where she stubbornly wears flip flops no matter how cold it gets. She is a proud nerd, Gryffindor, and member of Romance Writers of America and the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
