YWW Portland: Alternate Worlds: With David D. Levine

January 8 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Alternate Worlds: With David D. Levine

New date: January 8, 2019, New location: First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1126 SW Park Ave
Portland

Many science fiction and fantasy stories take place in alternate worlds — worlds like our own but with some aspect of history, physics, or evolution changed. In this workshop we’ll talk about selecting a change, thinking through the implications of it, and using that alternate world to create compelling fiction.

In January, the Young Willamette Writers will reach across time and space, and maybe even reality, to hear from award-winning author David Levine. (Maybe a bit of hyperbole there.) David Levine is the author of Andre Norton Award winning novel Arabella of Mars (Tor 2016), sequels Arabella and the Battle of Venus (Tor 2017) and Arabella the Traitor of Mars (Tor 2018), and over fifty SF and fantasy stories. His story “Tk’Tk’Tk” won the Hugo, and he has been shortlisted for awards including the Hugo, Nebula, Campbell, and Sturgeon. Stories have appeared in Asimov’s, Analog, F&SF, Tor.com, numerous Year’s Best anthologies, and his award-winning collection Space Magic.

Here’s what David says about his presentation: “Many science fiction and fantasy stories take place in alternate worlds — worlds like our own but with some aspect of history, physics, or evolution changed. In this workshop we’ll talk about selecting a change, thinking through the implications of it, and using that alternate world to create compelling fiction.” Join us! So bring along some ideas and imagination. What if we lived in our world but the earth revolved like the moon and the same side always faced the sun? What if people could breathe underwater? What if people didn’t sleep? How would EVERYTHING change?

Join us on Tuesday, January 8, from 7-8 pm for a very fun evening learning about alternate world building. Our meetings are always free and open to any student age 13-18. Just have a parent sign you in, and join our warm and welcoming group of teen writers!

Please note, this month’s meeting is at a new time and place. It will be the SECOND Tuesday of the month, and at the First Congregational United Church of Christ 1126 SW Park Ave., in downtown Portland.
