Writing Poetry In Community (the Portland Ars Poetica Way)

September 16 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

$40 - $70

Writing Poetry In Community (the Portland Ars Poetica Way)

During this workshop you will learn how to meaningfully critique poetry using the Portland Ars Poetica“method” for a critique session, which improves an individual’s poetry through establishment of, and participation within, a welcoming but demanding community of writers.

In the morning session, John Miller will briefly speak about the principles of the Portland Ars Poetica method and then we will constructively critique our poems within a sense of safe and open community spirit. Over lunch and in the afternoon session, we will revise our poems using those critiques, as a basis for writing a “version 2” of your poem. John will also have on hand a sample of books from his collection of poetry and poetry craft/criticism — the best way to write better poetry is to read more poetry.

John Miller is founder and facilitator of Portland Ars Poetica, a literary poetry workshop open to any Portland, OR-area writer looking for feedback and constructive criticism of their poetry within a collaborative environment. His poetry has been published in Glass Facets of Poetry and the forthcoming 9 Bridges Poetry Anthology. His short fiction has appeared in Tethered by Letters. John was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He has a BA in English from Amherst College.

Please bring:

  • One poem for critique, not more than 200 words (so the poem is digestible in a “here-and-now” setting)
  • Writing materials (or a laptop). Please bring 16 copies of your poem so that all participants and the instructor can read it.
  • Snacks (water and coffee will be provided; lunch is on your own. There are lots of lunch places within walking distance.)

This workshop is capped at 15 participants and registration will close as soon as we reach that number. Register today!
