Contracts, Copyrights, and Taxes. Oh My! With David Paul Williams
This presentation covers writing as a business. It reviews the basic magazine and book publishing contract terms, what terms are negotiable, what terms to avoid and more. It discusses copyright issues from the post-1978 perspective–what is copyright, when does it attach, registration, and licensing of the most common rights. Attendees learn whether the IRS treats their writing as a business or a hobby and the applicable federal income tax rules. We’ll cover the basis forms of business entities as well as the risks and benefits of each. We’ll also briefly cover the need for branding and marketing of the writer and the writing. I’ll provide an outline as well.
