November 7, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Southern Oregon Willamette Writers presents
Robert Arellano:”Unlocking the Power of Place, Unleashing the Complexity of Character”

Saturday, November 7
Central Point City Hall Council Chambers, 140 S. Third Street, Central Point

Morning Presentation: “Unlocking the Power of Place”
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Free to members, $10.00 for visitors

With examples from D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and Stephen King, Arellano will elucidate how literary masters bring their settings to life and give birth to unforgettable characters. You will learn how to harness this magic for your own writing.

1. Set up a story by using “first sensory details”
2. Zoom in to capture the mood of a place, create memorable character introductions, and set the plot rolling
3. Tips/tricks for the fieldwork behind writing a captivating scene

Afternoon Workshop: “Unleashing the Complexity of Characters”
1:30 – 3:30 p.m. $25.00 for members, $30.00 for visitors ($35 for whole day)

In a hands-on workshop that former participants have called “shockingly helpful,” you will take a character or plot in development and transform it by adding layers of complications. You may bring a few pages of a manuscript in progress, but all you really need to begin is a character.

1. Use guided writing to release partly formed or unconscious draft material to enrich a central character
2. Generate raw material by adding layers of complexity to your characters’ lives and backgrounds
3. Learn how to give plots more resonance by introducing extra narrative dimensions to props, settings, and character motives

Robert Arellano’s short fiction and essays on writing have been featured in dozens of publications including The Believer, The Village Voice, and Tin House. He is the author of six novels, among them Havana Lunar: a Cuban Noir, a finalist for the 2010 Edgar Allan Poe Award. Last year, Literary Arts awarded him the 2014 Oregon Literary Fellowship in Fiction. He teaches creative writing and digital media in the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University.
