Newport: Poetry with John Sibley Williams

June 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Writing Poems of Place/Demystifying the Submission Process

Award-winning poet John Sibley Williams will discuss “poetry of place” and demystify the process of submitting work for publication at the June 17 meeting of Willamette Writers’ Coast Branch. The free workshop takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Newport Library.

Williams, a Portland resident, is the editor of two Northwest poetry anthologies and the author of nine collections, including Disinheritance and Controlled Hallucinations. An eleven-time Pushcart nominee, John has won numerous awards, including the Philip Booth Award, American Literary Review Poetry Contest, Phyllis Smart-Young Prize, Nancy D. Hargrove Editors’ Prize, Confrontation Poetry Prize, and Vallum Award for Poetry. He serves as editor of The Inflectionist Review and also works as a literary agent.

“Poetry of place focuses on the landscapes we know, have traveled to, or imagine,” Williams says. “Our identities are tied to place and reflected in our writing. We will focus on both the mundane and the sublime of our surroundings and how that affects and informs our inner lives. In this presentation we will study and discuss poems by other writers to see how they evoke place, focusing on authenticity, universality, and the musicality of language.” Prose writers will also benefit from this workshop, he adds.
