First Lines Critique Group
April 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The First Lines Critique Group meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 6, from 7:00 to 8:30. Making a good first impression and showing the reader what they can expect as they read on is important. If you’re struggling to polish the first few lines of your work, maybe we can help.
One of the most popular Salem Chapter meetings was when we met together as a large critique group. We would like to attempt this online and see how it goes! We need 30 volunteers to send us the first two lines of something you are working on. Also tell us your name, what type of work it is, and a two line synopsis of the work. Send it to email@example.com
During the meeting, we will read this information, and the two lines, and then give the attendees two minutes to type their evaluation in the chat. (We will later copy and send the evaluations to the authors.) There’s a chance we won’t get to all 30, but we’ll do our best.
We encourage constructive feedback to help authors refine their work. Be aware that when submitting, you will read critiques and be prepared for that. Please be prepared for snarky remarks (which we discourage) and lots of helpful suggestions and praise (which we do.) Authors should also understand that it will NOT be a forum for them to respond to, or debate, criticism. (This is really important.) As authors, it’s important to pay attention to reactions and to be open to editing and rewrites.
This should be a great opportunity to polish the first few lines of your work! Of course, ultimately, it’s your vision and creativity so you can choose to utilize or disregard feedback! We want to foster a fun, supportive and helpful environment.
