January 28, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Writing to Sell: Commercial Non-Fiction
Color your way to success with a hands-on experience of discovering what editors really want! Louise Barden will show you how to determine the kind of article for a given venue, as well as length, organization, and degree of research an article might require. You will also get tips from her on where and how to get started on building your commercial non-fiction portfolio. Please bring magazines you would like to write for, especially small-interest magazines (gardening, coin collecting, sheep raising, etc.) for analysis and inspiration. (Or bring your laptop for online publications.)
About Louise Cary Barden
Barden draws from her training on how to get published in magazines which took her from teaching introductory English classes at UNC, Charlotte, to a full-time career in advertising. She served as an Assistant Vice President in Marketing with NCNB (now Bank of America), copywriting-marketing director with a small ad agency, and a full-time freelance advertising and magazine writer. Barden has since returned to poetry for which she has been awarded the Calyx Press Lois Cranston Memorial Prize 2018, the 2018 Oregon Poetry Association contest, and the SMU Marr Prize for Poetry in forms (finalist). Her poetry has most recently appeared in Timberline Review and Willawaw Journal.
Her chapbook, Tea Leaves (1996) is available on Amazon.
