Corvallis Online: Creating a Movie in Your Reader’s Mind with Lill Ahrens

May 25 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Creating a Movie in Your Reader's Mind with Lill Ahrens

Join us online at 6:30 PM with C. Lill Ahrens via Zoom for her info-packed presentation about the what-why-when-where of Emotional Truth (ET).

While actors convey ET through body language and line delivery, writers convey ET by describing those things and employing ET tools such as metaphor and inner monologue. Everything in a written story can have ET -- Every person, place, thing, animal, vegetable, mineral, and weather phenomenon.

Successful stories are infused with ET. The effect hooks readers on page one and keeps them under a spell, happily unaware of how the magic is made. Aspiring writers can also be unaware of it, so they might omit ET in their own work, unwittingly sapping tension, losing readers, or even pushing them away.

In this fun presentation, Lill shows how the magic’s made by deconstructing published excerpts by famous authors, revealing the ET tricks hidden in plain sight on every page.

About Lill Ahrens

C. Lill AhrensLill is an award-winning author and teaches “The Writers’ Ready Room at Corl House,” a guided critique class in Corvallis. Many of her students have become award-winning published authors, validating her belief that all stories have the potential for greatness. Over the past ten years, as an editor for Calyx Journal and the contest director for Oregon Writers Colony, Lill has read thousands of unpublished stories and discussed the semi-finalists with her fellow editors and judges. Thus she’s learned why some stories fall short of their potential, and what’s needed to raise them to the next level and beyond. Lill is also a visual artist and is drawing a how-to-write book, “Creating a Movie in Your Reader’s Mind: A Cartoon Guide to Writing.”
