Susan Kelly has a gift for conveying the structure of story. She generated so much enthusiasm at WWotR’s April 2015 meeting that we’re bringing her back for two all-day workshops in September.

Susan’s workshops are suitable for fiction and creative non-fiction writers. Her goal is always for students to have fun, to participate, and to learn lots. Join her for one or both September workshops in Corvallis. For maximum benefit, Susan recommends taking both.
Don’t wait too long to register. Attendance is limited to 25 for each workshop.

Character – The Heart of Your Story
Saturday, September 12, 2015

All great stories are character-driven. This means that the people in these stories come to life and readers relate strongly to them. Readers end up caring deeply about their struggles. They laugh and cry with them. They never forget them.

In this workshop, Susan will teach practical ways to create these characters. How to make them live and breathe and jump from the page. She’ll take attendees through the characteristics of a great character, character orchestration, maximum capacity, character arc, emotion, action-reaction, conflict, illustrating character in dialogue, illustrating character in description, and examples of great characters in different genres.

Attendees will have time to work on their own characters and to ask Susan questions about their work. They should bring a 10-page scene from one of their works (not the story’s beginning or the ending). This scene should contain at least one main character and some dialogue. New writers who don’t have a scene should bring an excerpt from a favorite novel that meets these requirements.

Susan will provide easy character checklists to use during and after the workshop. Attendees will leave as better storytellers and writers, knowing how to put character at the heart of their work to transform it.

Plotting – Heavenly Journey or Hellish Descent
Sunday, September 13, 2015

Trying to write a story without some kind of plot outline is like trying to make a journey in a foreign land without a map. You’ll probably reach your destination eventually, but the journey might be arduous and long!

In this workshop, Susan will show attendees how to create a map of their stories. The map will look different depending on whether you’re a more analytical writer or an intuitive writer, but it will be a map nonetheless. She teaches a combination of the Hero’s Journey and the 4-act structure, taking attendees through a story from beginning to end, discussing author intention, showing them how to create story arcs and character arcs, and where in the plot to move the arcs. Because all great fiction is character-driven, there will be particular emphasis on the arc of the main character(s) through the story, showing how character drives plot regardless of genre. Susan will also cover how to make a plot more commercial.

Attendees should bring pen and paper, or their laptop, so they can work on their own plots. They will also have time to ask Susan about their work.

Susan will provide easy plot checklists to use during and after the workshop. Attendees will leave able to outline a plot and able to improve their own plots.
