Finding My Story, Losing My Voice
Presented by C.B. Bernard
The remarkable story that became Chasing Alaska: A Portrait of the Last Frontier Then and Now (Lyons Press) all but fell into Bernard’s lap. Telling that story followed a 14-year journey through four cross-country moves, two failed novels, more than a hundred rejections, and a less-than-strategic rethinking of Bernard’s entire life. Learn from — and laugh at — one writer’s mistakes. Bernard will talk about his adventures in writing and publishing about the Last Frontier, focusing on the benefits of self-discipline and self-delusion, and the things you should be willing to sacrifice in service to your story. There will also be an accompanying slideshow from the book.
C.B. Bernard‘s book is a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Travel Pick and National Geographic top book choice and finalist for a 2014 Oregon Book Award. Memoir, biography, and adventure all rolled into one, his book paints an insightful portrait of Alaska through the intertwined viewpoints of his own journey and that of a distant relation, the famous but not well known, early 20th century Arctic explorer, Captain Joe Bernard. A career writer for more than two decades, C.B. Bernard has worked as a newspaper and magazine journalist, among other things. He lives in Portland with his wife and a temperamental bird dog named Shakespeare.
