Willamette Writers Coast Branch continues its free Writers-on-Writing workshops on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Newport Public Library from 7-8:30 pm with Nancy Steinberg leading a writing workshop entitled, “Dispatches from the Field and Lab:  Science Writing for Everyone.”   Why is science writing so important?  Come and find out!  In what is sure to be an educational evening, Steinberg will discuss different types of science writing and the potential markets for it and participants will have the opportunity to try their hand with some short exercises.

Nancy Steinberg is a science writer and communications consultant specializing in translating technical information about environmental and marine research for non-technical audiences, including coastal managers and the general public. Steinberg has worked under contract to a range of academic and non-profit clients from east to west, including the Hudson River Foundation in Manhattan, Oregon Sea Grant, The Nature Conservancy, the American Genetic Association, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation, and Oregon State University. In the past ten years, Nancy has undertaken projects on a range of subjects, including the underwater volcanoes of the “submarine ring of fire,” rocky intertidal ecology, marine biotechnology, and the local impacts of sea level rise in Long Island, New York and southern California. Products of her work have included press releases, public outreach materials, web sites, curriculum materials, and magazine articles.

Nancy is also a freelance writer and has published articles on scientific and non-scientific topics for Oregon Coast magazine, Oregon Coast Today, and the Newport News-Times.  Steinberg lives in Newport with her scientist husband, second-grade son, and golden retriever mix.

The Oregon Coast chapter of Willamette Writers offers its Writers-on-Writing workshops on the third Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the McEntee Room of the Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye St.  WW is sponsored in part by the library, The Hallmark Inn, and the Sylvia Beach Hotel.  Admission is always free and all are welcome.
