The Art and Craft of Beginning, or Seeking the Big Bang

The beginning of a story is both a process and a product.  What psychological challenges does the writer face in getting started? – The dreaded ‘D’ words—Doubt and Discipline.  We’ll talk about trust and about committing to a long-term relationship with your created product.

The technical challenge of deciding where and how the actual narrative should start becomes manageable, even fun, once the psychological commitment is firm.  All stories share the same need to begin with a Big Bang energetic enough to set in motion an entire world.  We’ll also discuss prologues, the strategy of starting in media res, and the myth of exposition.

You gain:

  • the confidence to push through doubt
  • the features of strategic story-telling
  • a checklist for assessing & revising the opening pages of a narrative
